A day out with mozilla...   [VIEW FULL POST]

Synopsis : My meeting with Seth and Chris, two employees of mozilla, on their visit to India.

I was just browsing about, when i found this post stating mozilla is visiting India. Seth Bindernagel, also stated in his blog, he wished to meet some people in India. I being an voracious mozilla user and fan, that i even uninstalled IE from my system, dropped a mail to Seth. It was a great surprise to me,that Seth responded "yes", since i found that Seth had to meet people at Google later that day. Firstly, a great thanks to Seth and his team to spare some time to meet me individually for a couple of hours. After a string of e mails, i was at the hotel where Seth and his team were put up. Seth works at Mozilla, California. I was there with a couple of my friends, whom i never seen using IE.

I rang Seth's room and he was down in a minute, we shook hands, introduced ourselves. He is a smiling jolly to go guy, typical American. Also he had the I PHONE, with him. He offered me to take a look at it. YUP! I HAVE LAID MY HANDS ON THE I PHONE, and its amazing....! I love that picture pinch and the way i moved back in my browser. It is really GREAT. Getting back to the visit, we were joined by Chris. Seth is more of an evangelist, who helps mozilla in creating user communities. Chris is the first employee of MOZILLA.

Seth was just asking us, if we were using mozilla. We all told him, we are voracious users of mozilla firefox. I added that i had used flock also, and i had written a couple of extensions in mozilla firefox. He was very happy to hear that and he explained the purpose of mozilla's visit to India. Mozilla is very much interested in creating user groups of developers and more. They are offering hardware, software and other support. Such communities are already in place in japan and other countries. I told him, soon there will be a mozilla user community in INDIA. [[[read the full article... ]]]

I have seen a lot of mozilla users of late, meaning the people are realizing firefox is a better browser than its counterpart. If you want justifications, i can give you why mozilla is better and even why one of its counterparts is the worst browser in the world. What i have not seen is that internauts (google this) are not using mozilla to the fullest, by means of extensions. Whats more, you can even write your own. Here is the stop - the mind block. It is not rocket science. I have written extensions in under half an hour and it is pure java script and XUL.

To write a good extension, you must think of a good problem. That is, the usage. Give or come out with a nice idea and there are people (yours truly included), who can write the code. If the audience is very wide, and they use this extension everyday, then it gets launched at mozilla add on center. So, the basic point is - the problem.

So,the idea is to build a mozilla user community and share ideas and build code. Write extensions, arrange a camp or a workshop, celebrate!!

I was hungry and all five of us (me, vivek, sharad, Seth and chris), soon hit the breakfast table. Here i had a long chat with Chris. Chris is a typical developer, and is the first employee of mozilla. When the mozilla project was first started, he was the first person and he is a hardcore developer. Yes, hardcore developer, he was wearing shorts, had long hair. He was telling about himself, which i have compiled here. May be i should have done a podcast.

Mozilla was previously under a different browser name, and they decided to start a separate unit, of which Chris headed. He got ten more members in to his team and they built the first browser - firefox. I asked him a lot of questions. too much questions i should say. He added that there were two interfaces in the firefox. One is the back layout (gecko) and is written in c++. The external user interface is written in XUL. I learned XUL at MDC. (MDC - Mozilla developer Center), and i told him i liked it very much. He then asked me about my extension - i told him what i did. I also added up with a few more ideas, which he thought were worth writing them as extensions. I asked him a couple of questions, those cannot be said here, coz of privacy issues to mozilla corp.

Then we talked more on extensions, firefox, thunderbird, flock, greasemonkey and more. It was a typical developer talk. Imagine, a hardcore mozilla developer, the first employee too. I have nicked him "The father of mozilla". We also discussed about how to spread the word, and i told him of some events like blogcamp, wikicamp, barcamp. I hinted him an idea of having a mozicamp (Well, we can have some other name too..). But Seth thought, that day is a little far off, i must say.

It was a special and rare opportunity for me, and they were happy to meet us too. Seth said, he learned more in meeting an individual firefox user than in meeting a company. He was happy and i was extremely happy.(Seth, if you are reading this, i am thanking you for the opportunity given, and the time spent.)

With a few bucks in my paypal account, last week , i was in the mozilla store and i checked out a nice t-shirt, but i thought, i can buy it later. It seemed like Seth had seen me.. He gave me and my friends, a mozilla t-shirt and a mouse pad and a few stickers and a poster. For somebody, this can seem like just a ordinary t-shirt, it means more to me. It has the firefox logo on it. (Thanks Seth)

When i read Seth's blog, it was expressive. But in person, he was more involved in the discussion and we enjoyed the conversation with him. He seemed to impress me more in speech, than in his blog. We then took a few snaps, one in the I-PHONE too. I know it will take another six months to see i phone in india

When i walked out, i was full of smiles. I was flying - i met the mozilla team.

A few hours later, one fellow saw my stickers and he was no where near impressed. In fact he thought, i was a kid to collect those stickers. How do u tell him? What must i tell him? He could not recognize the logo, and he is a senior software developer. I really did not know what to do. Perhaps, i should have said - my cousin brother in kinder garden, loves stickers. I proudly pasted one on my desktop.

If you are still using IE - mail me, i ll show you, why you must switch to mozilla, especially when you are working with software. I can stand people using opera. It is the fastest and the safest browser, but certainly not IE. Drop me a mail at barbi[dot]bruce[at]gmail[dot]com

Thanks lord, for this opportunity. Seth and Chris, Thanks for spending your time.

INCREASE BACKLINKS

What is specified below is a big list of do-follow bloggers.

What is do-follow?
When you drop a comment in a blog, you leave your link there. However this link is not visible to the search crawlers. It is marked as "no follow"

How to remove this?
Search for "no-follow" in your template, and delete it.
Wordpress users, download the do-follow plugin.

Why do this?
When you do this, all comments are considered back links. Hence, you ll get mroe comments, and it leaves no side effect in your blog. If you are blogging for money, this can be of great help.

What to do next?
Comment in the below blogs to get a backlink.
Also remove no follow in your blog, add yourself to this list. Plz maintain all the existing links. Write a post and let your friends know about this. If they write a post, you will also get a backlink. So spread the word.
I have not seen this much in any indian blogs, so here is a nice chance to build the loop.

Will this be a problem?
Never. You are just asking google to consider these links also. Nothing else!

******The big list starts here, add your blog after removing no-follow*****

Trip to Makedatu - sangamam - cauvery banks   [VIEW FULL POST]

- BARBI SCRIBBLED THIS ON 7/19/2007

04-07-07, wednesday

There are quite a lot of places around Bangalore which you can plan for a weekend or in a college trip. Makedattu aka makedatu aka makedatta is one such place. The actual spot is sangamam.

Details of the place:
90 kms from banglore , towards the south.
Route : Travel from south of bangalore via kanagapura main road and carry on.
Approximate time to travel : Three hours. Despite the short distance, the roads are a little rough towards the end of the journey.

I was with a lot of my friends and eased away a lot of time in the bus. The actual place you can reach via bus is sangamam. Sangamam is the place where the two rivers cauvery and arkavadi meet. When you reach the place, you can see the cauvery from the right and arkavadi from the left, almost canceling each other's force. So the water is sort of stagnant here. There is a small hotel with pretty average food and a few shops selling beer in this bank. Other than this, there is nothing much here. A few men suggested that there were dogs here. Imagine seeing a Basset Hound right next to you. You ll be horrified, Somehow these are just fake.

To get to the other bank, you have to take the small boat. The boat ride is almost not necessary, if you can swim. the water is only 6-8 feet deep for 50-100 meters and is quite shallow. It does sound risky, better take the boat. I did the same. However on reaching the other side, i did experiment the depth of the river by crossing it on foot. I reached almost half of the width, still my chin was well above water. I enquired the boatman about this. [[[read the full article..]]]He said it is more than 8 feet deep in the middle. A lot of our friends played at the shore.

If you reach the place well on time, say before noon, it is good. In fact, the earlier the better. This will allow you to visit shiv samudram falls as well as makedatu. Once you are in the other bank of sangamam, it is a three kilometer walk to makedattu and most people prefer to walk the way along the banks of the river. Once you reach the end of the three kilometer stretch, you have reached makedatu.

Makedatu originates from kanada - "make" for "goat" and "datu" for "cross". In the instance, the whole of he river gets narrow between the high rocks and the width of the river narrows down to only 20 feet (it seemed to be more to me, however). It is so narrow that it is claimed that even the goat can cross the river. This is where the river gushes with full force between the rocks. I really doubted if the goats can cross. There are even steps in the mountain to take you to the rock. You can see the force of the water as well as the monkeys around. Don't get any closer to the edge of the ricks, it is a fatal fall for sure from there.

If you are interested in science, you can watch out for sedimentary soil and sedimentary rocks on the banks of the river. Also you can witness what are called slates, layers of rocks, in this place. I managed to take a lot of videos on this place, shooting the rocks, the sand, the river, the banks, and even the monkeys..

The journey from sangamam to shiva samudra falls is about a little more than 40 kms. The shiv samudram bluff is also a nice place to visit. But it can swallow some time. It was too late in sangamam and i had spent so much time in the banks as well as makedattu, that we could not find time to visit shiv samudram. One of my friends, who had been there last week, also told me there is a small falls nearby this place. Around 5 kms from here. The details of this, you can get it from the localities there.

SAVE THE TAJ   [VIEW FULL POST]

- BARBI SCRIBBLED THIS ON 7/17/2007

So many e mails, sms, scraps and messages in communities. All these to vote for the Taj. The prize - to place the monument among the seven wonders of the world. No wonder, it is called a wonder of the world.

But do you know, in what critical state it is in?

Mark twain, one of my favorite childhood authors, claims - there are two kinds of people in the world, one who have seen the taj, and the other, who haven't.

TAJ MAHAL POLLUTIONOver the past twenty years, the taj mahal has seen a remarkable change in the color. The white marble, is slowly turning gray or even black, due to the high pollution rate around this monument. I guess most people will not have an idea of what the picture depicts. It is actually the white marble of the taj, which has turned dull due to pollution. Picture source : BBC
[[[read more about TAJ]]]
The primary source of the pollution is the factories around Agra, which emit a lot of sulphur in the air. The change in color is attributed to this sulphur gases and smoke.

What has been done about this?

Bill Clinton visited India and the taj. On seeing the fading beauty, has donated loads and loads of money, roughly $250m, to save this most beautiful man made construction. He is truly a global citizen. The taj mahal is cleaned every two years, with a resin compound. Despite the cleaning, a few portions of the marble are found to turn yellow, curse the chemicals and the smoke. So many other plans are being enforced to keep this monument as beautiful as it is. The Government, acting via the court, ordered a lot of measures to take place. However, these still fail to make action in a fruitful manner. Curse the politicians - most of them are corrupt! More than a good percentage of the money, given for any good or productive cause disappears.

What can you do about this?

Not much directly. I certainly dont want you to donate millions to the taj mahal beautification. But as a citizen of India, i think it is a responsibility of every one of us, to make people aware of this dwindling beauty and to make active steps in protecting the same.

My brother and his friends visited the taj mahal last week and they were less excited than visiting a theme park. With diminishing beauty, taj mahal can no longer be listed in the seven wonders of the world, ten or twenty years down the line.

Spread the word. - google "taj mahal pollution" to get more content.

Save the taj mission -
Use blogging or any other means to spread the word.
Team work works better - Drop a comment and i will link all people, who have written about "Save the TAJ".

Spin wizard muthiah muralidharan has become the second person in the history of test cricket to clinch 700 wickets. The only other to have 700 test victims under his belt is the other spin wizard - shane warne. It has taken just 12 test matches for murali to move from 600 to 700. Thats amazing.
